About Rome

The Roman Online Society was founded in late January 1997 by Pete Bonanto, Tom Hamilton, and Dan Thompson. They started the society in the hopes of having a free, fun, and wonderful role- and gaming society for everyone with a truly Roman Empire theme. Still going strong, the society strives to bring together Online Friendship, and Role-play. We as members continue that goal.

Board of Directors

Pete (Owner & Founder)
Joe (Site Admin)
John (GM)
D'Arcy (GM)
Phillip (GM)
Micah (GM)

The Board of Directors will direct the society and basically act as the people who are the caretakers of Rome behind the scenes. New implementations on the page and other things will be directly controlled by the Board.

The above people have contribued to the future of the Roman Legion by generously giving cash donations to support upkeep, admin and hosting fees.

We also would like you to setup your ICQ info for general convenience.

First Name:      The Roman first name you selected for yourself

Last Name:       [RL] followed immediately by the Roman Family name you selected for yourself.

Nickname:        Full roman name

The end result for a sample Roman (Sarius Carus) would look something like this:

First Name:      Sarius

Last Name:       [RL]Carus

Nickname:        Sarius Carus

1.  ICQ: The reason for this is so that we can easily identify you as being Roman. The [RL] in the last name allows us (in the event of lost contacts) to quickly add your entire family by searching for [RL]LastNameHere. You can also search for just the [RL] and get a complete list of Romans to add to your contact list instead of copy/pasting them from the Avatine Hill page all day.If you use your ICQ for talking with both Romans and non-Romans and you would like to keep the nickname you already have, we suggest making a new ICQ account and learning how to switch between the two accounts. The same thing applies for email; we request that you keep your address book synched with the citizens page. It is important that you be able to quickly and easily contact other Romans. In addition, once you do join, contact as many Romans as possible so they can know to add you to their ICQ lists and add an address book entry for you. Also, do not avoid Romans on ICQ by using something like invisibility often, as this reflects poorly on you.

2.  MULTIPLE ROMANS: Playing multiple romans is forbidden. This should never be done and destroys both your honor in the society, and any respect you might have had.

If you are able to do these things, then you will be able to enjoy one of the most interesting experiences in your life. Ask anybody who has been around a long time: the hard work has infinite rewards. Hail, fellow Roman, and enjoy Rome in all its splendor and grandeur, and most of all, HAVE FUN!

Role-play

Role-play is a large part of the Roman Online Gaming Society. We simulate the existence of a pseudo-ancient Roman society. If you are to be involved in a role-play scenario an e-mail will come to you from secretscenarios@yahoo.com with explicit instructions for you, and often important decisions for your Roman Character to make. Remember, in Rome, you have two identities...you are whomever you are in real life, but you are also who your character is. How you define who you are is how you act, are you a polite or impolite person? From a good family? Who did you marry? What is your rank? Who are your friends? Do you show proper respect for authority? What decisions do you make in scenarios? Do you participate in Role-play and if so what roles do you play? All of those things are your decision and your choices but they determine who your Roman persona is and what is expected of them and how they are perceived by the general NPC population and fellow Human character Romans. It is extremely crucial to make decisions not just for what you think is right, but also in following who your Roman is and what their individual identity is. Keep in mind, many people could not tell the difference between say Emperor Perseus Varro in the old group (see library for histories) and Pete in real life. The same could be said of Tomidius Servo or Tom H in real life. It is important to know that often one's character in Rome is not who they are in real life...in fact more often than not.
